why i need to learn how to zone focus …
the other day i walked otis through a stretch of 1st street in santa ana that is a little rough around the edges. we were walking at about 4:00 in the afternoon, less than a mile from my office. i have to admit, i was a little uncomfortable. there were junkies, hookers, thugs … i’m not exaggerating. now, to be clear, i am not claiming that the woman pictured below is anything but i nice lady who wanted to talk to otis. she appeared to be dressed as a bumble bee cheerleader (black and yellow. yellow knee high socks, almost matching hair). i had to take a picture of her. i had to take a few and i was really hoping she wouldn’t notice because i didn’t know how she’d react … so i snapped a few … i was so excited to see the one below, until i realized that it was not in focus. this is the final straw. i know many street photographers use zone focusing. i know it is not that difficult, in fact i understand the concept, i have just never set my camera up to use it … NOW I WILL!!
Thanks to E.Wang-Lee for the links and tips.

Zone focusing is a need little trick that allow you to focus even faster than any AF lens on the market. On my lenses, you will see a little masking tape with mark for 3, 6 & 10 feet. I rarely miss my subjects, no matter how fast they move.
thanks Kris. We still need to get that cup of coffee!
I am looking up tips on zone focusing on line. Are there depth of field/focal length charts available? You know what I mean? Kind of like a chart that would show what the leica lenses have on their barrels?
